IMR 4895 and 168gr Amax
IMR 4895 and 168gr Amax
I finally got around to shooting the test loads that I loaded in July........yeah, I know that's pitiful....... but 41.8 grains seems to be the load. I believe y'all can tell which group it is. I'll load a few tonight and see what they do from 200 yards tomorrow evening. And for some reason the top of the target is rotated to the left in this post.
The older I get the more I understand why roosters just scream to start their day.

I loaded 10 more tonight to see how they do at 200 yards tomorrow evening. That's the distance that I need the sweet spot with these. Will post the results.

Man I think you may have something there. Still tho, like you said, need to test again to verify. I've had a fantastic group on one outing, come back and barely be MOA the next.

It’s really windy this morning and if it don’t calm down I won’t shoot today. Instead I’ll load some rounds for the twin to this rifle. Both are Remington 700 Tactical with the 20” bull barrel. The other one has the barrel profiled and threaded for the OPS Inc 3rd Model suppressor. Both are crazy accurate with Speer 165gr PSPBT projectiles.

I shot at 200 yards today and the rifle/round combo is better than I am. This group was with my heartbeat moving the crosshairs. I didn't measure it but it's about an inch at most. The bull is 3 inches. And for what it's worth, this IMR4895 is surplus powder from the 80s or before.

That is some great shootin'! I think you're ready!
Re: IMR 4895 and 168gr Amax
I want to set the crony up and check the velocity. There's a 4" vertical drop from 100 to 200 and that seems like more than it should be. Of course, I can set my zero 2" high at 100 and be 2" low at 200 and be just fine but I won't make that decision until I check the speed. I don't think there's enough room before max charge to get any better accuracy while looking for speed.

I rarely have a max charge end up giving me the best accuracy fwiw. I'm after the most accurate load I can get with the components I'm using.
Re: IMR 4895 and 168gr Amax
According to Nikon, with a 4” drop, you’re around 2748 FPS. Not too bad.
Re: IMR 4895 and 168gr Amax
This has been my experience as well. I thought about tinkering with a couple of tenths but will call it good.
Thanks for that info. With rain coming and arthritis flaring up I think I'm gonna call it good.

Not Nikon, but another calculator I use.

It would be hard to shoot much better, if at all, than that anyway, for me anyway!
Re: IMR 4895 and 168gr Amax
Jason, that chart that you posted is closer to my actual results. The drop from 100 to 200 is closer to 3" than to 4". I'm absolutely satisfied and loaded up 40 more rounds Thursday evening. Thanks for posting that chart.

Glad I could help. That velocity is pretty good. I was getting 2725 with 165s in my 308. Glad you could use those bullets too.
