Re: I thought this was pretty interesting
I'm partial to the early Bonnie Blue Flag. I used to fly a miniature version of it on my desk when I worked for the federal government. No one knew enough history to know what it represented, hence I didn't get in trouble like I would have if I had flown the Battle Cross.

I wish I had gotten my daughter a lifetime license when she was a baby, but honestly I never expected her to actually want to hunt.

sdw,
The bucks in the latest pictures are done growing. Notice the narrow velvet antler tips. Those antlers will now take a few weeks to mineralize and harden into bone before the velvet sheds.

...another point I want to make about running cameras: I've certainly seen situations where cover habitat is limited to narrow strips along fences and drainage, such as farm country or open plains, where deer are forced to be fairly predicable in their movements. If they want to stick to cover durin...

Re: Pro and cons
I think it all comes down to personal preference and personality. I fully get the desire/pleasure of the "surprise factor"--being surprised by whatever buck that shows up. But my personality is that of a "knowledge seeker." I always want to know as much as is humanly possible abo...

I've planned on seeing Scotland, but never thought of hunting there.

Agree. Utah/Arizona area. You have the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, and Grand Escalante parks all within a couple hours drive of each other.sdw wrote:Grand Canyon or Yellowstone

Re: Public bathroom
For me, it's not about modesty. I too have had my fair share of dehumanizing hospital stays. For me, it's worry someone will think I'm a pervert. Seems the world is full of psychos these days, and I don't want anyone assuming I'm part of that growing demographic!

Once the lidocaine wore off, that incision hurt like a Son of a B! Still aching. Only thing that helps is hold cold-packs under my arm.
Feels like someone jabbed a knife deep into my armpit. Oh wait, that's exactly what happened...

Situation I run into--especially at Interstate Rest Stops--all the time. Walk into the bathroom, see 3 individual urinals. Two are "normal" height and one is a low "kiddie" urinal. A guy (let's hope) is at the regular height urinal at the end of the line. Now, do you take the oth...

Finally had the cyst under my arm cut out. I was dubious when the doc said he could do it under local anesthetic. But he was right. Went great. And it turned out he was a big-time deer hunter. May even get some business out of the deal! Almost makes it all worthwhile. Almost...

Re: Hot one
JCodd, You wouldn't believe what a difference seasonal timing makes when it comes to turning tough ground. The "soil" in my plots--and I use that term loosely because most of it is just chert rock--becomes concrete-hard in summer. Even a chisel plow won't really break it. But our new rotar...

Re: Hot one
Without real agricultural equipment, for years I've just been planting half-hearted fall food plots using the mow-spray-broadcast technique. Of course that system limits what plants can be planted (small-seeded plants that will germinate even when broadcast onto unbroken ground). However, one of my ...

As a kid, I loved summer. But as I've gotten older, and especially since I took up running, I've learned to hate summer. Give me 20 degree weather and I'm happy!

Sorry to hear about your week MUP.
Got out early this morning with my brother (who is visiting from New Mexico) and we power-hike 7.5 miles of steep trails at Percy Warner Park.

What are you going to do differently?
I don't know if any of you are as analytical about their hunting as I am, but I always find--after a less than successful season--that I go over and over the season in my head, trying to decipher what I did wrong. I usually end up with some sort of "plan" to hunt differently the following,...

Re: Deer growth
I do have some pictures of other deer but can't decide who is who when they are smaller. Doesn't help I generally format my cards each time I change. And that's why I do no summer camera census work until August. Bucks are changing so rapidly in June and July that I can't be sure of which buck is w...
